Marta Alexandra Abbott was born in Amsterdam and grew up between Connecticut and Prague. She lived in New York City before settling in Italy. Marta has studied painting, drawing, art restoration and floral design. While she now works more frequently on paper and canvas, she spent several years working in floral design in New York, Rome and Milan, and flowers remain an important source of inspiration.
From early on, her fascination with the natural world has informed Marta’s work, whether it be in subject matter or materials she uses to create. Marta’s interest in nature and its imperfect, cyclical beauty, extends to the ways in which we often seek to preserve, imitate and echo the essence of that beauty. In her work, Marta attempts to make permanent that which is fleeting, embrace the materiality of both her subject matter and her medium, and communicate her effort to understand the human experience of nature and beauty.
